Brunei Shell Petroleum – Champion B23 Development

Complex Composite Power Umbilical Supply

JDR was awarded a substantial scope of work to support the Brunei Shell Petroleum Champion Waterflood (phase B23) project.

Brunei Shell Petroleum is one of Asia’s biggest energy companies. It will use JDR’s subsea production umbilicals to redevelop the Champion field as part of the Waterflood Project to increase oil recovery. This contract is the third umbilical project JDR has worked on for Brunei Shell Petroleum.

Brunei Shell Petroleum plans to increase the existing Champion Field production via large scale water flooding of the deeper and more developed reservoirs. Concurrently Brunei Shell Petroleum will install a number of new platforms. JDR will develop and manufacture ten custom designed composite power umbilicals totalling 13 kilometres, for operation at water depths of up to 32 metres. The umbilicals will be designed by JDR’s in-house engineering team and manufactured at JDR’s state-of-the-art UK facility in Hartlepool.

The umbilical design for this project is complex. The customer requires an umbilical system to transport power and communications to multiple platforms from a central hub platform. This approach will enable the operator to distribute field-critical utilities across the field as required, versus building individual services into each platform. The product will transport chemicals, low and medium voltage power, air, and fibre optic signals – all in one single bundle!

The composite power umbilicals will be manufactured using JDR’s Vertical Lay-up Machine (VLM), designed specifically for multi-function bundles. The VLM enables bundles to be manufactured without in-line jointing
