SUBSEA POWER CABLES (SPC)

JDR provides Subsea Power Cables used to link surface platforms or FPSO's to subsea trees, as well as platform-to-platform applications. JDR is fully accredited to ISO9001 and has the engineering, manufacturing and testing capabilities to build subsea power cables in accordance with the latest industry standards.

JDR recognizes the importance of designing for the specific project requirements in terms of transmission (electrical or optical) but also the mechanical characteristics needed for reliable service. Dynamic subsea power cables experience flexing or variable axial loading during their service and are, therefore, technically more challenging than static applications. JDR offers full Dynamic Analysis, Fatigue Analysis and Seabed Stability Analysis to prove the cable system design suitability. Actual qualification testing can also be conducted to verify the design analysis work.

JDR has supplied subsea cables containing electrical and, optionally, optical fiber cables. With our extensive experience in subsea cables and umbilicals, the benefits JDR offer includes:

  • Selection of materials and manufacturing processes for reliable product service
  • Product design for flexing
  • Termination and testing at JDR avoids risks of delays at off-site locations
  • Designs based on International Electro-technical Commission standards
  • Mechanical aspects addressed for application-specific parameters
  • Products for single or three-phase systems, with voltages up to 36 kV
  • Termination designs for subsea or topside locations
  • Product application analysis (e.g. dynamic analysis, seabed stability)
  • Offshore engineers to support system hook-up and test

JDR designs products for specific client applications. In general, the information needed for preparation of a design includes:

  • Length (from power generator/source to load)
  • Water depth and geographical region for installation
  • System schematic
  • Operating voltage and maximum allowable voltage drop
  • Operating electric current or power
  • Maximum ambient temperature along the length
  • Short circuit current and duration
