London Array Offshore Windfarm
The world’s largest offshore windfarms
The London Array wind farm is in the outer Thames Estuary, 19 kilometers from the UK’s Kent and Sussex coast. The first phase of this major project comprises 175 wind turbines and two offshore substations and is one of the world’s largest offshore windfarms. The turbines are installed at water depths of up to 23m, connected to an onshore substation on the North Kent coast by subsea export cables.
JDR was contracted to develop the Inter-Array Cables and termination systems by the London Array consortium of DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar. JDR’s scope of work included the engineering, design and manufacture of over 200 km of 33kV subsea array cables complete with proprietary hang-off and termination systems. JDR’s product system links individual turbine generators and offshore substations. London Array project teams will employ JDR’s proprietary hang-off and termination system; specifically designed for flexibility and reliability and to minimise installation costs.
The Inter-Array cables were manufactured at JDR’s Hartlepool manufacturing facility, for delivery in 2010 and 2011. This advanced manufacturing plant is alongside a deep water port with immediate access to North Sea shipping lanes.
