How JDR is building a more sustainable and resilient supply chain

Global supply chains have faced unprecedented pressure in recent years. From the COVID‑19 pandemic and post‑Brexit trade shifts to ongoing geopolitical instability, the energy sector has had to rethink how it sources, manufactures and delivers. The International Energy Agency’s State of Energy Policy 2026 highlights resilient supply chains as a central theme — a reflection of how critical this issue has become for long‑term energy security.

After more than two decades working within JDR’s supply chain, I’ve seen first-hand how these pressures have reshaped our priorities. Price, availability and technical capability remain essential, but resilience now sits alongside environmental performance, ethical practices and responsible sourcing. Building a supply chain fit for long‑term growth means strengthening capability, improving sustainability and deepening supplier partnerships

Strengthening UK supply chain capability

JDR’s expanding UK manufacturing footprint gives us a real opportunity to grow domestic capability. Sourcing closer to our operations — where commercially and technically viable — reduces reliance on long international routes, shortens lead times and builds resilience into our production processes.

We are already identifying areas where UK suppliers can play a greater role, particularly in categories where domestic capability is emerging or can be developed with targeted support. Bringing more material supply into the UK strengthens our own resilience while contributing to the wider growth of the domestic manufacturing base.

But location is only part of the equation. How materials are produced matters just as much. We increasingly assess factors such as recycled content, embodied emissions, production methods and the use of lower‑carbon energy. As a UK cable manufacturer supporting the offshore energy sector, helping build domestic capability in these areas creates value far beyond our own operations — it supports suppliers as they grow alongside a rapidly expanding industry.

Responsible sourcing and supplier sustainability

Where materials come from is only one aspect of responsible sourcing. How suppliers operate is equally important.

Health and safety, ethical business practices, environmental performance and responsible sourcing are all embedded in JDR’s supplier selection and ongoing assessment processes. These expectations are formalised through our Responsible Sourcing Code and supported by cross‑functional expertise from HSE, quality, sustainability and supply chain teams.

We are also helping suppliers build the sustainability capabilities increasingly required across the energy sector. In September 2025, we hosted a dedicated supplier sustainability event at Blyth, bringing together 58 local organisations. Working with sustainability specialists Energise, we provided practical guidance on carbon measurement, reporting, sustainability strategy and evolving industry expectations.

This engagement builds on progress within our own operations. Through our partnership with Waste Mission across our UK facilities, we are forecast to save more than 1,700 tCO₂e by the end of 2026. We are now working with suppliers to share these learnings, identifying opportunities to improve waste management, reduce emissions and strengthen environmental performance across the supply chain.

Sustainable procurement for long term delivery

For JDR, sustainability and resilience go hand in hand. Greater visibility of risk, stronger supplier relationships and a deeper understanding of how materials are sourced and produced all support better‑informed procurement decisions.

As JDR continues to grow, this approach will become even more important. Strengthening UK capability where it makes sense, maintaining high standards across our supplier base and reducing environmental impact all contribute to a more resilient supply chain — from sourcing through to manufacturing.

This is ultimately about long‑term delivery. By investing in responsible sourcing, supplier development and domestic capability, JDR is building a supply chain that can meet customers’ requirements today, adapt as those requirements evolve and support the future of the UK’s offshore energy sector.
